Designing lifestyle made simple

So often I have come across the costly mistake of poor space planning and believe me when I say "costly". All rooms are first and foremost functional spaces, in which we live, eat, entertain, sleep, read, dress, bathe etc. If the room does not meet its first critical criteria of functionality, it really won’t matter how beautiful it looks! Whether you are trying to improve the your current home, buy or sell, this is the foundation from where we build upon.

Space planning is the first consideration for any interior alteration. This would usually involve defining and allocating zones within the home, to accommodate your needs and activities. The space plan will also define the circulation patterns that show how people will move through the space.

Here are some questions to begin with:

  • USE - What is the purpose of the space?

  • FLOW - Is it easy to move around?

  • NUMBERS - How many people will be using the space and will they all be using it for the same purpose?

  • ITEMS - Can furniture be moved into or out of this room from other areas of the house?

  • FEEL - How do you want the room to feel, space-wise – open and airy, cozy, minimal, serene?

  • LIGHT - How much natural light is available and what kinds of lighting will be needed?

  • FOCUS - What is your eye drawn to is the room and how can you take advantage of them?

  • BALANCE - Do you like balance and symmetry, the unexpected, or a combination?

  • EXTRAS - Is there anything else on your wish list for this room?

These questions will highlight the problems that your space plan has, the next step is considering solutions. An interior designer is an expert who can help provide creative solutions. You might find that you need to compromise on some of the points. If you have a budget that accommodates building work, minor wall alterations can go a long way, however if not then maximising the space you do have is crucial. So before you begin to consider how the room will look and feel, space is the first change to overcome when it comes to home interior design, not your rug!
